EU: Groups in twenty European countries celebrate Document Freedom Day
Open Source News - 27 March 2008 - EU and Europe-wide - General

Document Freedom Day was celebrated yesterday in twenty European countries, including Croatia, Ireland, Latvia, Germany and Portugal.

In Croatia, the Croatian Linux Users' Group (CLUG) registered its support for the day to promote free document formats and open standards. Support also came from computer technicians in a technology institute Dundalk, Ireland. "We try to support open standards across the board where applicable in both Mac, Linux and Windows environments", they wrote on the documentfreedom website. In Latvia support came from the newly formed Latvian Open Technologies Association (LATA).

The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs was praised yesterday for its use of Open Standards. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier received a cake, a letter and a book on the history of media, as gifts from representatives of the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) and Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII).

Portugal's National Association for Free Software (Ansol) organised parties in Lisbon and Porto. In Lisbon for example, Open Source enthusiasts gathered for discussions and dinner.

Proponents of Open Source and Open Standards hope to make 26 March the day to promote free document formats. Several organisations including the Free Software Foundation Europe, the ODF Alliance, Sun Microsystems, OpenForum Europe, IBM and GNU/Linux distributor Red Hat in February began a grassroots campaign on Document Freedom Day.
